Caring for Zirconium Jewellery

Caring for Zirconium Jewellery

Zirconium is a remarkably hardwearing material, but it’s not completely indestructible. Just like other items of fine jewellery, Zedd rings require care, attention and thoughtful storage to stay looking their best.

Zirconium is not a traditional choice for stylish accessories, but its unique combination of properties makes it ideal for everyday fine jewellery. For example, zirconium is hardwearing, durable, highly resistant to heat and corrosion, lightweight, and hypoallergenic. Zedd emerged to blend these attributes with classic precious metals like yellow, white and rose gold, platinum and silver. The result is an innovative collection that fuses classic and contemporary materials for a new generation of buyers.

Although we are proud to boast the qualities of black and silver-grey zirconium, it is important to know that all metals have their limits. Just like traditional precious jewellery, Zedd rings need to be treated mindfully and with the right level of care and attention to extend their lifespan. If you follow the simple top tips below, your Zedd black zirconium ring will last a lifetime, and potentially more lifetimes after that. Preserving your jewellery for the next generation is possible with a few simple care instructions.

1. Avoid harsh chemicals

It’s true that zirconium has a great reputation when it comes to chemical corrosion. That being said, why take the risk with your Zedd ring, especially if it’s your wedding ring or was purchased for a memorable occasion, such as a milestone birthday or graduation? Get into the habit of removing your jewellery before using cleaning products, hand lotions, creams or colognes. Even hairspray is worth avoiding. Remember, harsh chemicals can damage or dull our signature black zirconium finish and affect your chosen precious metal. Better to be safe than sorry.

2. Know when to take your jewellery off

No matter what you’re into – running, boxing, gardening, painting, motorbiking – we’d recommend removing your jewellery before engaging in most activities. A hard knock or scrape could affect your jewellery, scratch its surface and dull its shine. The chlorine in swimming pools, the chemicals in hot tubs and the salt in seawater can also wreak havoc on precious jewellery and discolour gold, so don’t take the risk. And don’t even get us started on suncream!

3. Find a separate storage space

If you’re diligent about taking your Zedd ring off before hitting the gym or before bed, you’ll need the right storage solution. We recommend a separate compartment in a lined jewellery box or a soft pouch to avoid scratches. Although black zirconium is scratch-resistant for the most part, it could easily get damaged rattling around a pocket full of change or dropped in a pile of bracelets and chains. You have been warned!

4. Regular cleaning is key

Scan the internet and you’ll find loads of old wives’ tale cleaning methods, like using toothpaste. This can be very abrasive and can damage 18ct gold, so don’t believe everything you read. Our advice is to keep things simple and wipe your jewellery regularly with a soft cloth to remove oils and residues. If there’s a build-up of grease and grime, you can use a very small amount of household washing-up liquid and warm water. Give everything a good clean and dry with a soft jewellery cloth for a great finish.

5. Last thing on, first thing off

If you’ve ever been tempted by a last second spritz of aftershave or deodorant, you might want to follow the ‘last thing on, first thing off’ rule. It’s exactly as it sounds, put your Zedd jewellery on the second before you leave the house and take it off as soon as you get in. Simple, but very effective at extending the lifespan of your jewellery.

6. Think about your diamonds

Zedd Diamond is one of our best-selling collections, so knowing how to care for diamond-set jewellery is important, too. Follow steps one to five to keep your black zirconium and precious metals looking lustrous and scratch-free, but remember these tips, too:

  • Don’t shower in your jewellery –you might be tempted, but shampoo and soap can build up around your diamonds, in between each stone and around the setting, causing them to lose their sparkle.
  • Be careful with ultrasonic cleaners – you might see these advertised as the best option but proceed with caution. Although they are great at removing grime, the vibrations of an ultrasonic cleaner can jostle diamond settings and make them more susceptible to falling out in the long-term.

These simple jewellery care top tips aren’t rocket science, but they could mean the difference between a box-fresh-looking ring and something lacking oomph.
